Chapter Fourteen
CIAN HAD SEEN a lot in life, but nothing more magnificent than Madison coming into her druidess magic in a way he never expected. While he knew her blade had given her the knowledge to fight, he never foresaw the army she had behind her.
The tree they had lain beneath the night before exploded with Madisonâs emerald magic before it emitted a pulse that blew away the wavering portal the enemy had sent men through. Seconds later, a roaring wind kicked up, and the tree bent in their direction.
No, not bent, but fought.
It might seem like the tree was caught in a windstorm, but he knew better when flailing branches caused enough havoc amongst their enemies that he and Madison were able to take advantage. He dodged right and left around a branch, then drove his blade through a warrior tangled up in it.
On and on it went like that.
The tree aided them as he and Madison felled their enemies until one man was left standing. One of the men who had kicked him when he was down. Before he could make a move, Madison, her eyes blazing in emerald fury, roared and whipped her dagger-turned-sword straight into the manâs heart.
Then, just like that, magic faded from her eyes, and she began trembling.
ââTis all right, mo dhraoi.â He closed the distance in two long strides, pulled her into his arms, and rested her cheek against his chest as the wind subsided and the tree branches returned to normal. ââTis over. Weâre okay. Unscathed.â
Her trembling slowly subsided as he kept soothing her. Brought her back into the present and helped her cope with what just happened. Cope with having killed many this time.
He soaked up her pain.
Helped release her guilt.
âHow can I be such a revered druidess if Iâm capable of that? Everything I just did?â While her gaze was teary when it rose to his face, it was also strong. As if her inner magic soothed the way. Helped her understand why she had no other choice but to act. To protect her and Cian in whatever way possible. To strike down anyone sent to do them harm.
âBecause you're a warrior druidess, and everything you did was to protect the people you love.â He caressed her cheek. Hoped she understood. âNot just me but everyone endangered by Raghnall, including our people. Your sisters. The whole of Ireland. The course of history.â He shook his head. âAnd you were magnificent, Madison. Furious in your fighting yet merciful in how you ended your opponents.â
He had watched while battling. Had been mesmerized by how eloquent she was. At one with her surroundings. Swift in the death she dealt. Even up to the last man who he knew she finished off solely for what he had done to him. It had been an act of passion. Of defending love.
âI was defending that.â Madison fingered his black robes and, like she had the previous day, focused on something else while she grappled with things. âWhy didnât you tell me about this? Because I get the sense you had reservations.
